Stiff.
A baby cow.
A dead baby cow.
Legs straight.
Tongue lolling lifelessly.
“It ate the cord.”
She said,
my mom’s friend.
Mom brought me there to play.
And I wasn’t scared.
“It ate the cord.”
This explained everything
as I played in the backyard
with children I’d never seen.
With children I’d never see.
Not thinking about the tongue.
The straight legs.
The dead baby cow.
The baby cow.
Stiff.
