For my Uncle Dale
5/10/47-4/16/11
Restrained
by tubes and wires
by pain that will not
abate
by fatigue that will not
be cured by sleep.
He is leaning over you
cradling you the way you
used to cradle him.
His hand massaging the back
of your bald head.
You whisper to him,
coarsely, through the mask
feeding you the oxygen
you're too weak to consume
on your own.
You whisper words
you've been saving up for.
You whisper words
you've been living your whole life.
He tries to comfort you.
“Be with Jesus,” he says.
And through your mask
you smile and pat his arm.
