My first week of picks produced mixed results. My upset special was correct, but I was left stunned by both the Vikings and Bills victories. I finished a decent 9-7, good enough to sniff the payoffs but not good enough to get in. I will have to get better.
As expected, I did not get get any exact game scores correct, though I was very very close on Seattle and Green bay until Seattle scored a late touchdown. I did get the correct point differential in the Saints/Falcons matchup (3 points). Points are only given for correct point differential if the correct winner is also chosen.
Clearly, I'm no expert, but it's still fun. Still, I want to beat out that moron Pete Prisco and I came close as he went 10-6 last week.
What's in store for this week?

Pittsburgh (1-0) at Baltimore (0-1)
This is always my favorite game to watch. Though my analysis on the Ravens from last week seems way off, this game should still be entertaining. The Steelers came out fast and then held on for a win against the Browns last week. The Rvanes looked bad, and with no real running game, they will have to rely on their defense and the home crowd. I don't think it will be enough.

Who will win?
Atlanta (1-0) at Cincinnati (1-0)
After a slow start, the Falcons poured it on the Saints. Matt Ryan had a career day and the Falcons offense looked unstoppable at home. The Bengals stymied the Ravens and harassed Joe Flacco all day long. I think they get after Matty Ice here and score enough to keep up.
Falcons 23 Bengals 28
result:
Falcons 10 Bengals 24
Who will win?
Miami (1-0) at Buffalo (1-0)
The Dolphins made me look good as my upset special, winning at home against New England. Buffalo shocked the world and spoiled a number of elimination leagues by winning in Chicago in overtime. The Bills defense looks solid and the Dolphins offense is much improved. I can't see the Bills going 2-0, and they won't.
Dolphins 24 Bills 16
result:
Dolphins 10 Bills 29
Who will win?
New Orleans (0-1) at Cleveland (0-1)
The Saints can score, that’s no secret, but can they stop anyone? They couldn't last week. The Browns were ran out of town in the first half last week but charged back and nearly pulled off the improbable upset against Pittsburgh. They seem to be much improved and they should put up a fight here, but, the Saints just have too many weapons.
Saints 28 Browns 17

Saints 24 Browns 26
Who will win?
Arizona (1-0) at New York Giants (0-1)
Oy vey. It's going to be a long year for the Giants. That defense is terrible; Eli Manning and that offense already look tired and out of sync. Meanwhile, the Cardinals are boasting a suddenly impressive receiving corps, a swarming defense and the high of a fourth quarter comeback. It's a long road trip, so, that will keep it close, but the Cardinals are the better team. By a mile.
Cardinals 20 Giants 14

Cardinals 25 Giants 14
Who will in?
Detroit (1-0) at Carolina (1-0)
The Lions moved the ball at will against a horrific Giants defense. The Panthers surprised many by beating the Bucs on the road with Derek Anderson at the helm. The Lions defensive line is outstanding, but the Panthers defense overall is better. The Lions won't have as much room to run this week, and I think the Panthers win a close one.
Lions 21 Panthers 23

Who will win?
Dallas (0-1) at Tennessee (1-0)
We knew Dallas would have trouble stopping anyone. We didn't know Tony Romo was going to be as ridiculously bad as he was. The Titans blew out the Chiefs at home, but the Chiefs aren't what they were last year. I don't think any of these teams are any good, but someone has to win. I'll take he team that can actually play defense.
Cowboys 21 Titans 28
result:
Cowboys 26 Titans 10
Who will win?
Patriots (0-1) at Minnesota (1-0)
I picked the Patriots to lose last week against Miami in my upset special. This was not a knock on new England, whom is very good, but rather on history (Brady always struggles in Miami) and on an improved Miami team. The Vikings throttled the Rams in a debacle that surprised everyone except, perhaps, for Vikings fans. But, he Vikings aren't as good as they looked last week, and there's no way Belichick and Company go 0-2.
Patriots 27 Vikings 20
result:
Patriots 30 Vikings 7
Who will win?
St. Louis (0-1) at Tampa Bay (0-1)
Uggh. The Rams. That defense was supposed to carry them as the offense did what it could to score a few points. But they got demolished last week, and now they're without Chris Long for at least eight games. The Bucs were (in my opinion) upset last week against a good Carolina squad with a nasty defense. If they can get the run game going this week, it could be a game of keep away. The Rams defense will be better this week, but that offense won't be able to score enough.
Rams 13 Buccaneers 20
result:
Rams 19 Buccaneers 17
Who will win?
Kansas City (0-1) at Denver (1-0)
The Chiefs were an aberration last year. They're not a playoff team. They're probably not even a five hundred team. The Broncos offense looks as potent as ever and that defense looks faster and more physical. While I have some concerns about their less than stellar second half last week, at home this week against a bad team, it won't matter. Broncos in a blow out.
Chiefs 17 Broncos 34

Chiefs 17 Broncos 24
Who will win?
New York Jets (1-0) at Green Bay Packers (0-1)
As expected, the New York Jets shut down a mediocre offense and won a low scoring battle. The Packers got blown out on the road in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated. Any talks of them being a legitimate contender should be stopped. They're facing a strong defense here, too, but the result should be better if you're a Packers fan.
Jets 16 Packers 24

Jets 24 Packers 31
who will win?
Houston (1-0) at Oakland (0-1)
The Texans defense was very impressive last week, shutting down RG3 and Morris. The offense was not good against a bad defensive unit. The Raiders did a decent job stopping the Jets offensive attack but couldn't do much on offense. They may have trouble moving the ball here, too. Texans win a low scoring battle.
Texans 19 Raiders 13
result:
Texans 30 Raiders 14
who will win?
Seattle (1-0) at San Diego (0-1)
Seattle looked like the champs on both sides of the ball last week, but still made some critical errors that could have cost them. By the time game day rolls around, they will have had ten days to iron out those kinks. The Chargers struggled to get any kind of rhythm offensively last week against a stout run defense. Now they face an even better one on short rest. This one won't be pretty for the Bolts.
Seahawks 27 Chargers 10

Seahawks 21 Chargers 30
Who will win?
Chicago (0-1) at San Francisco (1-0)
The Bears lost a stunner last week at home, falling to the Bills 23-20. That defense does not look improved one bit. The 49ers blasted the Cowboys in the first half last week, aided by four cowboy turnovers-- most of which were gifts from a beleaguered Tony Romo. They then did nothing except compile injured defenders in the second half. I still don't think they're a true contender, but they should handle the bears here.
Bears 20 49ers 31

Bears 28 49ers 20
Who will win?
Philadelphia (1-0) at Indianapolis (0-1)
Chip Kelley and company pulled off the victory after looking like sure losers last week. The offense was potent and fast, but the defense was uninspiring and the seocndary should have signifiacnt troubles facing the passing attack of Andrew Luck and company. My AFC Super Bowl pick, the Colts, looked like everything but last week against denver. They can't run, they can't play defense, they can't protect Andrew Luck. But I think they can outscore the Eagles in an entertaining shootout.
Eagles 29 Colts 34

Eagles 30 Colts 27

UPSET SPECIAL: Jacksonville (0-1) at Washington (0-1)
Jacksonville had an unbelievable first half, leading 17-0 at the intermission, before getting demolished in the second half and ultimately falling 34-0. They look improved on both sides of the ball, though they are still a year or two away form contending. The Redskins meanwhile generated nothing against a fierce Texans pass rush. They won't face quite such stiff competition here, but I do like Jags to win here in a bit of an upset.
Jaguars 26 Redskins 17
